Portland Winter Light Festival
DUALISM (2022) — a light art installation LOCATED IN THE WINDOW DISPLAY AT THE NINES HOTEL. ON DISPLAY FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY.
A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE MIND AND BODY EXISTING AS TWO SEPARATE THINGS — WORKING IN TANDEM, INFLUENCING EACH OTHER. EXPLORING THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN OUR METAPHYSICAL AND PHYSICAL WORLD.
THE MIND IS NON-SPATIAL. IT IS BASED IN THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND DESIRES. WHAT GOES ON INSIDE OUR MIND IS UNOBSERVABLE AND UNIQUE TO US AS AN INDIVIDUAL. OUR THOUGHTS HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON BODILY ACTIONS, AND THE PHYSICAL, WORLD AROUND US.
THINGS APPEAR A CERTAIN WAY IN THE MOMENT, BUT NOTHING IN THE WORLD STAYS EXACTLY THE SAME. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO OBSERVE EVERY FACET OF ANOTHER PERSON AT ONCE, OR TO UNDERSTAND SOMEONE IN THEIR ENTIRETY. THERE ALWAYS IS ANOTHER SIDE TO THE STORY BEYOND WHAT WE SEE. OUR THOUGHTS COMBINE WITH THINGS WE LEARN AND EXPERIENCE. THIS INFORMS OUR EVER-CHANGING CONSCIOUSNESS, INNER AWARENESS, AND PERCEIVED REALITY.
THE PERCEPTION THAT THE VIEWER HAS OF THESE PIECES DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF DAY, AND THE ANGLE THEY ARE VIEWED FROM. EACH PIECE SHIFTS AS YOU WALK BY. THEY ARE INTENTIONALLY DIFFICULT TO CAPTURE ON CAMERA, AND DESIGNED TO BE IN A CONSTANT STATE OF CHANGE. THIS MAKES THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE MOST IMPORTANT TO THE WORK, ALLOWING FOR EVERYONE TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
